Grade R

There has until recently been no registered Grade R school available for small children in Zwelihle township outside Hermanus. Grade R schooling has been identified as a major developmental step for young children, and it is essential for children’s successful integration into early formal schooling. The Hermanus Rainbow Trust first set up Zwelihle Pre-Primary School as a project of the Trust, and over time it has grown to the point where it has become a stand-alone entity that shares the same board as the Trust. The school enjoys official recognition by and registration with the Department of Education, which ensures that regular funding is provided for teachers’ salaries and limited teaching tools. The school faces a fair amount of problems, particularly relating to the spaces available for classrooms, but children who attend the school are educated by qualified and dedicated teachers. Children are not turned away if their parents are unable to pay school fees.
