Welcome to the Hermanus Rainbow Trust

The HRT is a leading "Social Enterprise" providing "Community and Social Development" services and support to hundreds of Orphans, Vulnerable Children and Disadvantaged Families, living in the impoverished communities of the Overstrand in the Western Cape, where nearly all families are "affected" by HIV in one way or another.

The Challenges of Living in an Impoverished Community in the Overstrand

Shacks 1Imagine for a moment, living in a community where the conditions are generally poor with over 50,000 living in small shacks with no fresh water, electricity or sewerage available in the shacks. The unemployment levels are very high (71%) and the literacy levels low, with 59% earning less than R1,200 per month and 4% not having any form of income at all. It is estimated that 45% are “infected” with HIV, but the reality is that virtually every family is “affected” by HIV in one way or another. Tragically this is further aggravated by widespread crime, gangs, drugs, violence, rape, teenage pregnancies, HIV, neglect and the abuse of women and children.

The Devastating Poverty Cycle

many of the people living in Zwelihle stay in shacks without electricity, running water or toilets in the shack.

These devastating conditions have resulted in a Poverty Cycle that has broken down the family structures, morals, discipline and the way children are brought up, causing single parent families and “child-headed” households.

Our Vision for the impoverished Communities of the Overstrand.

The overall Vision of the HRT "Social Enterprise" is to "Rebuild the Fabric of Society" in the poverty stricken communities of the Overstrand.

"Community and Social Development Programmes"

To achieve our VISION  we have 4 integrated "Community and Social Development" Programmes which provide comprehensive services and support to hundreds of Orphans, Vulnerable Children and Disadvantaged Families.Grade R Graduation

Key Objective

The key objective of the programmes is to improve the "quality of life" of all the people in these communities by eliminating poverty, hunger, malnutrition and child morbidity. This will be achieved by providing families with life, parenting and "early chilhood development"  skills to rebuild family structures and provide children with a better future.

We achieve these objectives through the 4 main "Social Purpose" programmes and a capacity building project.

The HRT "Social Enterprise"

The Hermanus Rainbow Trust has developed a "sustainability strategy" to limit the challenges of getting "grant funding" from government, funding agencies and business in these difficult economic times. The strategy is built around the establishment of a "Social Enterprise" in line with global trends.

Non-Profit Organisations - The Current Funding Model is NOT Sustainable

Why ? What are the alternatives ?

The Hermanus Rainbow Trust, like many other NPO’s / NGO’s, is threatened by the current "grant funding" models in South Africa, where most NPO’s are totally dependent on "grant funding from Government, Funding Agencies, Business, Individual Donors, Sponsors and fund raising events.

Please help us help those in NEED !
